What to expect

Step 1

Schedule

Choose a mobile or online appointment and tell us the general document type.

Step 2

Prepare

Have the complete document ready and bring acceptable identification.

Step 3

Identify the Act

The document or signer must indicate the notarial act required. A non-attorney notary cannot choose it for you.

Step 4

Verify Identity

Your identity is verified using acceptable evidence before the notarization proceeds.

Step 5

Complete the Ceremony

The acknowledgment, oath, or affirmation is completed as required for the selected notarial act.

Step 6

Complete the Certificate

The notarial certificate is completed with the required venue, date, act, and signer information.

Step 7

Record the Notarization

The notarial act is entered in the required record book. Online notarizations also require a secure electronic record.

Step 8

Sign and Seal

The notarization is completed with the notary's official signature and seal, or approved electronic equivalent, as required.

What to prepare

  • Complete document with no required blanks left unfinished
  • Identification that meets current Texas Secretary of State requirements, or another authorized identity-verification method
  • Any required witnesses, if applicable
  • Preferred appointment date and time

Do not assume you must sign before the appointment. Whether a document may be pre-signed depends on the notarial act. An acknowledgment may involve a signature made earlier, while a jurat generally requires signing in connection with the oath or affirmation.

Common document types

  • Real estate and refinancing documents
  • Business agreements and authorizations
  • Powers of attorney
  • Affidavits and sworn statements
  • General personal and business documents requiring notarization

Not every document is eligible for every type of notarization, including remote online notarization. Contact us if you are unsure whether your appointment can be completed online.

Acknowledgment vs. jurat

Acknowledgment

The signer confirms that the signature is theirs and that the document was signed voluntarily for its stated purpose. The signature may have been made before the appointment.

Jurat / Oath or Affirmation

The signer swears or affirms that the statements in the document are true and signs as required in connection with that oath or affirmation.

Not sure which one?

We can explain the difference between common notarial acts, but we cannot select a certificate or give legal advice. The signer, document preparer, receiving agency, or attorney should identify the act required.

Remote online notarization

Texas RON uses secure two-way audio/video and, when the signer is not personally known to the online notary, identity proofing and credential analysis. Online sessions are currently performed through BlueNotary.
